SEQUENTIAL SURREALISM: showing the surrealism behind the realism

Comics are a storytelling medium but a visual medium where one not only looks at but “reads” a series of images juxtaposed in sequence to each other. While text is also an essential part of comics, Sequential Surrealism looks at telling a story visually surrealistically within a realistic setting: the body expresses the characters’ outlooks and movements of a particular action, the inner eye(s) is for the character to show how he/she ponders and/or looks at the world, the juxtapositioning in style is to reflect the moment and environment of the particular event taking place.

My focus is not just how the reader sees/reads the story but also how they experience the story. That there is more going on that what you see.

About CGhirardo

I grew up loving comics and wanted to do them for a living but after numerous failed attempts to enter the comic book industry, I gave up and worked as a freelance illustrator and then became a contemporary figurative painter. While watching “American Splendor”, a movie about the life of underground comic book writer Harvey Pekar and re-connecting with friends from The Joe Kubert School of Cartoon & Graphic Art, Inc. on facebook, I developed a renewed interest in comics and decided to launch a webcomic.

Using this approach, I am able to apply my “SEQUENTIAL SURREALISM” figurative painting style and my studies about modern art within a visual narrative format. The reason I call it “Untitled” is from the art world when an artist has no title for a painting, it is usually called ‘untitled’. “Untitled” allows me to free up possibilities for stories and visual imagery so I don’t feel restricted within one set genre or format.
