Hello Rob,
The cat’s out of the bag. Dark Horse Comics is publishing House of Fear starting in May 2019.
When I announced it a couple of weeks ago, the response from fans and friends completely blew me away. I had more people reaching out to congratulate me than I ever thought possible.
Because of the feedback I’ve gotten over the last six months or so, I’ve grown more confident every day. Not necessarily because my stories are brilliant (they’re good, but I still have room to learn and improve), but because of the people involved with the book are so incredible at what they do.
Holy smokes, the talent of the creative team behind House of Fear is amazing. Each time I get an email or text message that includes Jethro’s pencils, Mike’s inks, James’ Boyle art, Josh’s color, or Matt’s designs and letters, I feel this surge of energy and excitement (look below for recent additions).
With every step in the process, I realize that we’re producing something kids and adults are going to enjoy. And because I’m learning to see how others can enjoy something I produce, I feel this urge to keep on doing it for years to come.
Do you want to help ensure that I keep making these comics?
The biggest thing you can do is to preorder the Dark Horse collected volume. Don’t wait to buy it from me. Don’t wait to pick it up at the comic shop. Preordering is the crucial element at this point.
Preorder House of Fear on Amazon.
Preorder House of Fear on Barnes and Noble.
I’ve spoken to representatives at Dark Horse, and they want to make a push into the book market, where books and comics for middle grade readers are all the rage. Because I’m still a complete unknown writer and House of Fear isn’t a household name, I need to pretty much sell out the first printing if I want to have a second volume.
Right now, they’re hoping to print 5,000 copies. If I want to keep working with Dark Horse, we need to sell at least 4,000 copies.
That’s a lot of copies!
Those are rough numbers because preorders will play a key role in the print run. If I can show Dark Horse that readers are interested in the book enough to jump in early, then they’ll put more energy into marketing, which will help pull in even more interest. And if all goes well, the launch will be a success, and I can sign on for another volume.
(Just between you and me, I already have three scripts written for a second volume, and Jethro is currently drawing one of them. And I can’t wait to make them all a reality.)
So if you like what I’m doing with House of Fear, preorder the book on your favorite site. Help me show Dark Horse that we’re producing good stuff, so they’ll want to make more.
Thanks for your support,
James

P.S. We’re on the final stages of production for House of Fear: Teeth. This week, it’s been all Josh. He’s busy coloring the pages, and I’m thrilled at what he’s doing. Check out some images below to see why.
