Why did you feel you need Kickstarters help to launch your project and will your goal if reached cover all the creative costs?
I have some friends who’ve gone the Kickstarter route and met with some success. I also helped one of my publishers, Silver Phoenix Entertainment, with a couple of their drives. It’s a LOT of hard work to set up and maintain, but Kickstarter has a lot of great tools to make a campaign successful.
I went over the math plenty of times and yes, the modest amount I’m requesting ($2,000) will cover the expenses with a little wiggle room because poop occurs.
How did the creative team behind this Kickstarter Come together?
Ron Frantz, who published THE ADVENTURES OF SPENCER SPOOK back in the mid-Eighties, and I have been friends for a number of years now. I successfully published another of his properties, THE ORIGINAL SKYMAN BATTLES THE MASTER OF STEAM (based on the Columbia Comics/ACE Comics character) and we thought it was time for an all-ages humor comic book again.
Ron has been a great inspiration and not only scripted the second feature, “Restoration Hospital,” but supplied the comic book from which we’re reprinting Spencer Spook’s origin. He and Charlton Comics legend, the late Joe Gill, hatched the story idea for the Spencer Spook story that I wrote, one that involved haunting the space station. I mean people live there right?
Artist Eric Hawkins and I worked together on a story for CELEBRATION COMICS #1 (from BiMor Comics) featuring Nature Boy by Jerry Siegel and John Buscema. We enjoyed the experience and when he expressed an interest in drawing this comic, I took him up on it.
As for the variant covers, I’ve known Ken Wheaton and Scoot McMahon for a number of years. Same with Ty Templeton, whom I’ve interviewed for BACK ISSUE Magazine and THE KRYPTON COMPANION (both from TwoMorrows Publishing). I was elated when all three gentlemen said yes.
What do you believe separates your Kickstarter from the thousands of other Kickstartes out there?
Not only are we doing a comic book that can be enjoyed by kids and adults alike, but we’re presenting a never before reprinted tale of Spencer Spook’s origin.
Should there be a spoiler alert when I hint that the origin involves Spencer dying?
Is the Kickstarter the Start of something Bigger or is this a must have One Shot?
Definitely the start of something bigger. I’m gathering story ideas for further issues of THE GHOSTLY TALES OF SPENCER SPOOK. Also, I’m planning new comic books involving The Original Skyman and The Face, also owned by Ron Frantz, as well as a couple of supernatural titles.
Are Stretch Goals something important to your project or just your way to give back to the Backers?
I feel they’re both. I want to give the backers something special, which I’ll announce when we’re at 90% of our goal. Chances are it’ll never make its way into the comic book itself so I feel it’s quite special, especially for fans of Golden Age comic books.
If you saw this project, pretending it wasn’t your what would do you think of it and how you would react to it and Why?
I loved the revival of Spencer Spook, by Joe Gill and Pat Boyette, from ACE Comics back in the day. I’d be excited because my heart belongs to the days when creators were paid for their output, hoping to use it to get into a “respectable” field of endeavor. I enjoyed the reprints of Golden Age comic books and pulp magazines when I grew up and would like to offer some new material for like-minded fans.
What is the inspiration behind this project?
It started out with a story idea from Ron Frantz that he and Joe Gill concocted over 30 years ago: “Spencer Spook haunts the space station.” From there, Ron and I hammered out the plans for a full-length revival comic and it’s taken two years, but the results are well worth it.
Ok those are 7 Great REASON so Give em that Elevator Pitch, Creator:
Will do!
THE GHOSTLY TALES OF SPENCER SPOOK #1 is an all-ages humorous comic book featuring not only Spencer’s never before reprinted origin and the first ALL-NEW story in over 30 years, among other delights.
And in addition to a blank cover, we’ll also have variant covers by such artistic greats as Eric Hawkins, Scoot McMahon, Ken Wheaton, and Ty Templeton. Our goal is modest, but the fun is overflowing. Thanks for your consideration!
