So, we as a community and country have set aside a day for Women– what does this day really mean? And what does the day mean for you? For me International Day is exactly what it says….Women’s Day. Now, lets go a little deeper… International Women’s Day for me as a mother…to an Autistic daughter means that I really do not get a “day off”! But do I need a day off? NO I do not. What I need is a little time to reflect on my advantage of being a woman and a mother. What I need in addition to that is for people to stop asking me, “How do you do it, how do you raise a 14 year old daughter with a disability, go to school, keep up a house and at the same time have a terrific marriage with an even better husband?” My reaction is always “You get used to it, it became a way of life for me since she was age 3, it is not a burden, it is a joy and an adventure”. She is the best thing that has ever happened in my life. So yes that is what International Women’s Day means to me; It is not a day to celebrate that I am a woman… lol…it is a day to reflect on being a woman and enjoy its perks, its challenges, its surprises…
