I hope you’re well! Firstly, thanks to all of you guys that replied with some great feedback after last week’s mail! It was really appreciated!
This week I’d like to jam on a couple of things. In a moment I’m going to tell you about a giveaway that’s currently on offer, but first I thought I share a few things about my working practice. Specifically my methods of using a sketchbook.
I mostly use my sketchbook for character development and story ideas. I use an A4 Moleskine and Copic fineliners and Prismacolour pencils are my usual weapons for choice.
Working in my book is great fun and, of course, extremely therapeutic. Much more so than working digitally. Private, free flowing sketching really helps me reach a Zen like heads down, tongue out, transcendental drawing experience! Cosmic!
However, a day job, a family and drawing comics means I rarely have lots of time to pour into my book. I tend to fill it up over holiday periods. Being an art teacher in a secondary school means I’m fortunate enough to have long periods of holidays. Especially at Christmas and the Summer. I’m even more fortunate to have a lovely wife who is French. That means we spend most of our breaks chilling out in France with her family. It’s really important for us, especially the kids, who develop their bilingual skills whilst we’re away. And before you ask, my French is pretty good these days thank you! (Especially after a couple glasses of vin rouge!)
Anyway, I digress! It’s during these periods that I really dive into my sketchbook . It’s really good to be away from my computer and is a real antidote to the fast paced workflow I wrote about previously.
And, of course, if you’re relaxed and in the zone, that’s when the ideas start flowing! Each Summer I put together creative plans for the coming year. All of the GalaXafreaks stories have been born this way!
