Shits about to get weird

As writers we begin to find our style the more we work. As a reviewer I’m finding myself wanting to start with some honest statement about the subject. Todays subject is Weirdsdale by Mike and Bob Smeets. My honest statement? Oh, good, you were paying attention. My honest statement is this…

I didn’t want to like the book at all. The strange, hydrocephalic heads of the inhabitants of Weirdsdale threw me off. But, as a reviewer I try to find the audience that would enjoy this book. Upon reading it, I really didn’t have to try at all; I was one of them.

It’s not easy to describe the book, but were I asked to make a quick elevator pitch I’d say Twin Peaks on hallucinogenics. When the person looked at me with a cocked head and a quirky, questioning grin, I’d simply respond with, “Yeah, man, just read it. You’ll love it.” If you require more information, though, I can offer some.

Alice Galloway goes missing and her last known whereabouts are the spa at Weirdsdale Spa and Country Club. Her twin sister, Marla, goes looking for her and finds herself in a town whos inhabitants have all had some serious work done. Or is the work not so serious? I’m not completely sure. Heheh. Either way, the mystery propels the story forward and you keep turning page after page to see what happens next.

The art! I almost forgot to mention the art. Bob Smeets brings his A game every time. His art is solid, well constructed and really is the basis for the book. It has been said that the art in this book is a character itself, and I simply can’t say it any better. I tried, but I just can’t.

I really don’t want to give much more away, but if you love mysteries and are down for some complete and utter weirdness, then how have you not gotten this book yet?! Enjoy your time in Weirdsdale, but trust me….don’t drink the water.
