Why are you so passionate about Creating comics books?
Because comic books have been an escape since a kid. In a world of nightmares it’s great to have a place to dream while being awake. – ha just made that up. You dig that Rob? Haha. That’s deep. Anyways but yeah, honestly comic books are an escape from reality, I couldn’t imagine life without superheros, comics, cartoons, tv shows, movies, clothes ext.. ever since a kid I wanted to create my own comic and I’m glad I did. I hope one day KANE will have his own cartoon, tv show, movie, video game ext… and give people the experience I loved with batman, spawn, x-men, Spider-Man ext… growing up.
What Indie Title are you currently a huge fan of?
There’s a good bit I’m looking to buy. Money has been tight but Fetish Babies, Drexter, Cosmos, Tripping Over Reality, GLOOM, Supernatural Agents… man theirs A LOT I want to dig in. I’ve been paying close attention to everyone and I’m loving what I’m seeing. Once I get my ducks in a row I’m buying a copy of all these and more.
What do you want to accomplish with the comics you are creating? Are you looking for Fame, Money or something more?
All of thee above and I’ll explain why- with fame comes a big audience or vice versa- a bigger audience means more money to provide a better life for my family, I’m a husband and father of 2 and with more money means more readers so more readers means my comic is a success. I didn’t come into this business with plans of failing and creating something everyone hates and won’t read. So all in all, my answer is all of thee above.
Your Comic Book KANE is pretty Graphic at times. Has anyone you’ve known personally reacted to KANE in a negative way?
Hahaha. I can only imagine. Answer is no, at least not to my face. Although my Gramma is a big supporter of my comic but won’t read it due to its vulgar language and graphic content but that’s understandable, she’s a sweetheart and I’m ok with my Gramma supporting me and my comic and being proud but not feeling comfortable reading it. That’s fine by me. She’s my Gramma and I’m a Gramma’s boy.
Is KANE about Exploring fears of loss and exploring the violent nature of man?
It’s hard for me to sum up KANE since I know soooooo much more about KANE since I’m the writer. Everyone else only knows what they’ve read so far. Id say KANE is MUCH deeper than issue #1 shows. KANE is more than just violence, there’s another side readers haven’t seen of KANE yet. The question is true but not KANE in a nutshell. So yeah it’s fair to say that but don’t limit the idea. I think readers of Michael Mettlen’s KANE will be more than pleased with issue #2 and issues coming after. The story thickens and it’s a emotional roller coaster. I try to write KANE for more than just a comic but storis that also are eye openers and make the reader think deeply about life and the people around them and loved ones. It is a adult comic book series about a anti hero/vigilante/superhero filled with lots of adult humor, graphic content and vulgar language but it’s much more than that in the root of every story and readers will see this as each issue comes out.
You have come a long way from your 1st interview and constantly show the ability to learn and grow. On this Journey a Year later what have you learned that you wish you could tell KANE CREATOR MICHAEL METTLEN from a Year ago?
I’d tell myself tone down the excitement if getting KANE #1 out to the world because not everyone sees this idea in your head the way you do, practice drawing more and make sure issue #1 is everything you imagine it to be. (Although issue #1 got great feedback and publicity I’m not happy with my art.) Issue #2 and #3 are such huge steps above what I was capable of then. But as a artist I am my own biggest critic. I’d also tell myself to write more adult jokes in issue #1 like how I’m writing issue #2 and #3 and every issue after. I’d also tell myself to not ad the ASM #300 homage in the back of issue #1 for a ad of the cover for issue #2. Even though it’s cool it’s not the cover for issue #2 now because Bryan SilverBax of Upperdeck trading cards has done an incredible Limited Edition variant cover which cut out the old ASM #300 homage and I’m happy because Bryans work is incredible. ALL IN ALL I don’t regret anything I’ve done. Even though I’d like to change these things at the same time I have to keep faith in God and believe everything happens for a reason.
We all make mistakes on our Rise from Idea to Comics but What Accomplishments are you most proud of?
I’m very proud of myself for coming up with KANE. That’s not an ego talking. Making comics is something almost every kid dreams of doing but how many of those kids grow up and actually do it? I did it and I’m happy I said I would do it and I did it. To myself it makes me happy, if my comic makes others happy than that’s a goal accomplished as well. I’m happy I did a store signing and got to meet awesome people, I’m happy I have a publishing deal with Advent Comics and I’m happy they do so much for me and see my vision. I’m happy and proud how far KANE has come in just THREE MONTHS of its first release of issue #1. I mean that’s incredible. The buzz built around KANE far before January was just solely from posts of me talking about it and sharing pages I drew. I mean a lot of writers and artists have come to me and told me they really believe I came up with a hit its just a matter of it blowing up which I keep being told it might and KANE has the potential to have a cult following. I’m blessed and very thankful for all the blessings that have come along and hopefully will continue too. I’m shocked it’s all happened so fast. March 2016 I started KANE, October 2016 I signed with Advent Comics, December 2016 pre orders were available and January it released. Now issue #1 is sold on AdventComics.com , Comixology, Drive Thru Comics, Amazon (Worldwide digital and paperback) , Indy Planet and now we’re in talks with a few shops so I mean this is happening fast and it is truly a BLESSING. I’m grateful everyday for this and truth of it all is it’s still not THAT big but the small spoon fulls of success it’s seeing thus far- I’m very happy, and proud. Like a proud dad watching his creation grow into a big bad ass blue skinned, red vest, skeleton head, supernatural powered killing machine. Hahaha.THANK YOU EVERYONE WHO SUPPORTS KANE. THANK YOU SO MUCH!
Well done you have a single paragraph to tell us why we should become fans and what you are working on now:
When I was growing up (in the 90s) I loved superheros/anti heroes/vigilante characters in comics and cartoons- Batman, Spawn, The Punisher, Wolverine- the guys with the bad attitudes that take no shit from anyone. I liked the edge and the darkness of it. My comic Michael Mettlen’s KANE is everything you loved about those kinds of characters built into a more mature comic. I’ve heard it’s like “Ash vs Evil Dead meets Batman and Spawn on steroids”. My art style is also like a tribute to the late 80s and 90s. I draw and ink with fine detail instead of the new more-so cartoon-y comic style these days (Minus artists like Jim Lee and others similar) expect to see gore, blood, shocking graphic content, extreme violence and vulgar language, adult jokes and humor mostly very politically incorrect. Monsters, mobsters, Gods, Portals, Dark and Light magic, supernatural powers ext… but also expect to have at the root of each issue a very deep and sometimes dark message. Every issue is written so make the readers open their eyes and think deeply.
