Nine years ago, I hit a personal rock bottom.

The woman I thought I was going to marry had just moved out of the apartment we shared.

“You spend all your time in your office, working on your comics,” she told me as our relationship was crumbling.

“At first it made me sad, then a little angry, that you had all this time for these projects you were working on and so little for me. And then one day, I realized… I didn’t care anymore. And that’s when I knew it was over.”

Those words still haunt me a bit, and they were like daggers at the time I heard them.

Salt was tossed in those wounds when I received, in the same week she moved out, a rejection letter from a publisher (rejecting the very comics project I was working on that hastened the demise of our relationship) and edits back for a script I had poured my soul into from an editor who tore it to absolute shreds.

    So there I was…

    No girlfriend.

    No publishing deal.

And clear evidence that I was nowhere near as talented a writer as I thought I was.

At the time, it felt like rock bottom.

Nine years later, with the benefit of hindsight, I can see that moment as an absolute gift.

    It was a wake-up call.

    Here’s what I’ve come to learn…

My level of success then, now, and in the future is driven by 5 key levers.

Levers which are entirely, 100% within my control.

And these are the same levers that are driving your success as a creative as well. They are:

    P – Passion

    A – Action

    I – Integrity

    N- Network

    T – Talent

    That’s the equation, my friends.

And it really is that simple.

P.A.I.N.T. is the recipe you need to build a successful creative career.

And when you understand and internalize that, it can help guide you to where you should be putting your focus.

And in tough love fashion, I want to get this statement out there:

If your creative career is not EXACTLY where you want it to be right now, it’s because you’re lacking in one or more of those five key areas.

    That’s the bad news.

The good news, is that if you are not where you want to be right now…

It’s entirely in your power to fix it.

    Why PAINT?

Because all the passion in the world won’t amount to much of anything if you never take action and start creating.

All the natural talent in the world will be squandered if you’re not a person of integrity, as the world of comics is a small pond, creators talk, and bad apples get exposed.

And like it or not, you can be doing everything right, but without the right network of supporters, advocates, peers, and fans, your success will always be limited by the number of people who know, like, and trust you.

    However…

If you are truly crushing it in all five areas:

    – If you are passionate about your work and continue to find ways to keep your internal fire burning and reflect that in your work…

    – If you are taking focused action on a frequent, consistent basis and steadily progressing toward worthwhile goals and completing projects…

    – If you are a person of integrity, who does what you say you’re going to do, and keeps your promises to others and even more importantly to yourself…

    – If you’re steadily building and expanding your network of peers, industry professionals, media contacts, and fans…

    – And if you’re continually investing in yourself to improve both your natural talent and acquired skills as a creator…

…then there’s really only one other key variable in your journey toward success:

    Time

Because even when you have all the right ingredients, in the right amounts, it still takes time for them to cook.

On that dark day nine years ago, when it felt like I was at rock bottom, I made a commitment.

“Tyler,” I said to myself. “You were put on this earth to educate, entertain, and inspire. Do that every day, and everything will work out.”

    And you know what.

    I have.

    And it did.
